Having said that, in architectural practices, having some experience with either Archicad or Revit would be attractive so you may want to dabble in it for this reason alone. And as a student starting out it would be easy to become driven or limited by the software…not something you want. It is possible to do all/most of these things in Archicad - but they won’t be as immediate and obvious. Most degree programme will recommended it, and most offices will expect or be used to juniors knowing it.
Then for modelling ideas you need something quick, and Rhino is the king here. You can take diagrams you’ve drawn and colour, texture, manipulate and blend them in these. To make compelling visuals, photoshop is another key tool. Don’t just learn to draw pictures, but use drawing as a tool to understand what you see in buildings - form, mass, proportions, circulation, structure, space and light. If you’ve got an iPad then ‘Concepts’ should be one of the apps you want to master.
Your prospective faculty is probably not going to be impressed! Surgery is much more than cutting, and in the same way architecture is much more than BIM models.Īs others have said, hand drawing is a good fundamental to learn. Imagine you want to be a surgeon, and you decide to build up a portfolio of ‘cutting things’. Architecture is all about communication, and your degree course will emphasise that.Īrchicad and Revit are great documentation platforms, but don’t readily lend themselves to design or the communication of concepts which is where you’ll want to focus initially.
